Art
KS3 Curriculum Intent and Rationale
“We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents…” ~Bob Ross
Our aim is to inspire students to become confident, creative explorers, to enrich our students with different cultures allowing our students to experiment whilst enabling future success into independent, young artists. At the Mandeville School, we believe that quality art lessons will inspire children to think ‘outside of the box’ and develop creative knowledge and technical understanding.
Our KS3 art curriculum provides students with the opportunity to develop their skills in using a variety of materials and medias. At the start of Year 7, students learn the formal elements- the foundations of Art; line, tone, texture, shape, pattern and colour. We then build upon this as students go through KS3 where our schemes of learning are enjoyable, captivating and enables our students to flourish through a range of artistic disciplines. The KS3 curriculum is taught through the use of visual language where students are able to express their individuality, building independence through trial and error.
Our focus in Year 9 is to develop our students where we build on prior learning and their skill set. We get our students to critically reflect on their outcomes and we challenge their ideas and opinions on their artwork and that of others. Our schemes of learning in Year 9 give our students further opportunities to experiment and explore in depth the visual language of Art, finding their own creative pathway.
Mandeville Artists draw on a long history from the world of Art, sculpture, textiles and architecture from the past to the present. Our schemes of learning are designed and tailored to our students, so as students go through KS3, the schemes of learning are setting the foundations for GCSE Art and Design.
KS4 Curriculum Intent and Rationale
The KS4 Art curriculum builds on the knowledge and skills our pupils acquire through our KS3 curriculum. We follow the AQA specification for Art, Craft and Design.
At the start of year 10, students take part in different workshops that equip them with all the knowledge, techniques and skills which is the foundations of a successful and sustained Art project. Students cover a vast range of techniques from lino printing to image transfer. They experiment with different medias and materials with a heavy focus on observational drawing skills.
As students have learnt a range of skills and knowledge in KS3, KS4 is about developing these skills in a more critical and exploratory way.
A core focus is to ensure that our students are able and ready to independently create their own visual journey to produce a portfolio of work.
Art encapsulates our student’s minds, not only artistically but it supports with their vocabulary, their knowledge of the art world and it develops their way of thinking in a wider sense.
